My long battle with cancer began in 2008 at the age of 11. I completed a two-year protocol of chemotherapy and went into a full remission. I finished high school and left home to start college. In March 2015, however, a routine blood test showed my leukemia relapsed. This time, the chemotherapy caused my immune system to collapse and I spent 100 days in the hospital, followed by four months of intensive physical therapy. When my cancer came back less than a year later, my options had run out. On the advice of my doctors, I entered Dr. Carl June’s CAR T GENE THERAPY clinical trial in January at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). After just one treatment, I returned home cancer free within a month and had no serious side effects.
Now, nearly a year later, my cancer remains in full remission! CAR-T gene therapy gave me something that chemotherapy could not and has the potential to save many more patients like myself. ACGT’s resolve to advance gene therapies for all types of cancers is truly working and saving lives.
Please consider a year-end gift to ACGT so that together we can help more patients receive a forever remission.
Thank you for your support,
Rachel, age 21, relapsed leukemia survivor Healthy and in remission after just one gene therapy treatment.
